I had to keep mud off the road for over a week until our friends got time to change the wheel bearing. Again our friend Michael came to the rescue and changed one wheel bearing. The bearings for one wheel cost £40 so it wasnt too bad. The following week our other friend Alan tightened the other wheel bearings and said they were fine. I am so lucky with these arrangements. Our two friends are mechanics but arent so good with computers. So I fix the computers and in return they help with Mud, everyone is happy and no money has to change hands. I really missed driving the old beast though. Its strange but with our main car I can't stand any unusual knocks or squeaks. I always think its going wrong. BUT in the landy squeaks and rumbles seem to be the norm. There is something very satisfying about driving this old land rover. Its slowed me down a lot and its just fun. We don't even mind the fact that it rains inside the car as well as outside. Although I think we should at least try to stop some of the water inside as it is quite a lot in this bad weather. If you have any sugestions or tips about waterproofing the inside of a land rover 110 please email me.
On the 15th of Nov 06 yet another friend helped me with the steering guard I had bought. Doing all this on a shoestring is tough so when I get a chance for a bargain I have to take it. Anyway I had found a steering guard for £30. Just a plain one and a bit tatty. Our friend Lou is a top notch welder and so she welded recovery eyes onto the steering guard and then tidied it up and sprayed it black. It looked great. I did try to fit it myself but I couldnt even undo the old guard. My arms no longer work and the pain was too much. Needless to say I was prety frustrated at my feeble attempt.
Calling on an old friend I was told to drop round and he would help me sort it out. I have known Bill for years and he has always been a huge help with all our cars. He climbed under the car and struggled to take the old guard off. I think I might have damaged the nuts during my attempt. But he got it all off. The following day we planned to put the new guard on but it was raining badly. Bill just opened his garage and we drove the front end under the door and he got it all back onto the car. It looks much more sturdy than the old steering guard. I am not sure about it being black though. I might end up spraying it another colour like grey so that it stands out more. Like I say I cant make up my mind yet. Hopefully I will find some before and after photos to add to this page shortly. |
